Alvesta Picasso at age seventeen
Picasso is a much needed addition to Alberta's Sport Pony stallions. A multiple Supreme Champion, Sport Pony Champion and 2009 WPCSC Section B Welsh Pony Sire of the Year, his expressive movement, presence and self-carriage prove why he is a winner both in and out of the show ring! Combined with his great conformation and exceptionally quiet attitude, he's been able to sire top American hunter ponies. For seven consecutive years, Picasso has been listed on the USEF Leading Pony Hunter Sires List due to his offsprings success in the hunter ring in the US, which is a feat that's been done by a very few Canadian stallions. He has always thrown a ton of chrome into his foals and 40% have had four white socks and a blaze. Picasso's Farnley and Shenandoah breeding have made his foals extremely competitive on the pony hunter circuit.
"Congratulations! Picasso is a living work of art; his name suits him. I have searched for stallions from the U.K. before looking through the Canadian stud books and finding Picasso. Picasso is something extra-special in my opinion and I was wowed by him straight away. We should all strive for that degree of perfection!! You have my utmost respect as a breeder." Katherine, Wisconsin
His most notable offspring, Jumpin' Jack Flash and Glannant Jackpot, have recently taken the US pony hunter circuit by storm. Jumpin' Jack Flash, started showing successfully in the Green Pony Hunter division, in Wellington, Florida, in 2004 with a Championship in the division his first time out. He was being ridden by the #1 pony rider in the US, Schaefer Raposa, and won the Combined Green Pony Hunter Championship at 2004 HITS Catskills in New York and won his Small Pony Hunter class at 2005 WEF. He also qualified for the 2005 USEF Pony Finals. He was recently sold to Virginia and won a Reserve Championship in the Short Stirrup equitation division at HITS Culpeper and placed successfully at the Washington International Horse Show in 2007.
Glannant Jackpot debuted on the US pony hunter circuit in December of 2003 and finished 10th in the Small/Medium Children's Hunter Pony division in Pennsylvania. He is currently being leased for 2007 and finshed the 2007 season as the CPJHSA Small/Medium Children's Pony Hunter Year-End Champion and the CPJHSA Small/Medium Children's Hunter Pony Equitation Year-End Reserve Champion in the highly competitive Zone 2. Glannant Jackpot also placed 8th in the H&H Equitation Finals and was the Heritage Acres Small/Medium Children's Hunter Pony Circuit Champion.
Picasso's sons, Offside and Daventry's Breakaway, were recently sold to the United States as A Circuit Pony Hunter prospects. Young and unstarted Picasso offspring have been selling to the US in the high four figures.
Picasso has many top Sport Ponies in his pedigree. Blue Rain and sire Cymraeg Rain Beau, by the stallion Farnley Lustre, finished 1st and 5th respectively on the 2006 USEF Leading Pony Hunter Sire List. They were 1st and 9th respectively in 2005 and, once again, Blue Rain finished in 1st place in 2007. Farnley Lustre has been called the "sire of the century". He was the sire of some of America's top hunter pony stallions, including Hidden Creek's Rain Fox, Smoke Tree Mountain Ash, Farnley Belshazzar, Helicon Epic and Longacre Spinoff. GlanNant Bard, out of GlanNant Sonnet, finished in 28th place in 2005 and was previously named National and Supreme Champion Section B on the US Welsh circuit. Cymraeg Rain Beau is undeniably the most successful pony hunter stallion in American history. He finished 2nd overall on the sire list in 2003 with 47,452 points and has been a leader on the sire list for a number of years. His most successful offspring include Buzz Light Year - Pennsylvania Horse Show Small Pony Hunter Champion and Reserve Champion in the 1999 US Pony Finals. Remember The Laughter - Champion Large Pony Hunter in the US Pony Finals in 1995 & 1996, overall Grand Champion in 1996 and was 3rd overall in 1997 and Knickerbocker - Champion Medium Pony Hunter in the 2000 Pony Finals and overall Grand Champion. 13 of the top 30 Leading Pony Hunter Sires are Farnley Lustre bred.
Llandefalle Bonheddwr's dam, Shenandoah Nymph, was a big winner in her day. Supreme Championships against all Sections, a very lovely mare and very much like a feminine version of her dad, Farnley Lustre. Twyford Profit was a gorgeous bay stallion and a big winner in France and GlanNant Sonnet was shown for years under saddle while raising foals and, as quoted by Brenda Podolski, breeder of Picasso, "long before we started raising Section B Welsh Ponies, GlanNant Sonnet was my ideal in a B mare". She was recently given the 2003 Lithgow Wishnick Memorial Award for her outstanding contribution as a broodmare to the Welsh breed.
"Your stallion Alvesta Picasso is breathtaking, if he were crossed
with a high-quality Arabian mare, the resulting Welara offspring would be a dream come true." John, American Welara Pony Registry
Picasso's half-sister, Alvesta Royal Jewel, was 2003 VBHSA Breeding Reserve Champion in Virginia and currently stands 2nd in Green Pony Hunters and half-sister, Alvesta Royal Beauty, finished the 2006 show season as the Wisconsin Reserve Champion Section B Welsh and was the Champion Section B Broodmare at the WPCSA Nationals. His full sister, Alvesta Fantasia was the 2002 Parkland Welsh Pony Show Champion Mare, Grand Champion Mare and Reserve Supreme Champion Pony. She is now pursuing a successful broodmare career and has gone on to produce Supreme Champion, Alvesta Folklore. Alvesta Finesse, also a sister to Picasso, is the dam of Northern Cross Neon Lights who finished 3rd in Zone 2 for Sm/Med Green Hunter Pony and was Champion at Devon in the Green Pony Hunter division.
Picasso was not started under saddle until June of 2007 at the age of seventeen. He proved to be as easy to start under saddle as his babies and is an uncomplicated ride. Eager to please, a quick learner, wonderful gaits to sit and goes in a rubber snaffle. After only two weeks under saddle, he attended his first show and proved his outstanding and patient temperament during pouring rain, a tractor pull taking place right next to the show ring and Fair spectators standing along the sidelines with kids, balloons and various animals! His short 2007 under saddle career finished with an Alberta Welsh Year End Award as Reserve Champion Senior Western Pleasure.
Picasso's first show after only two weeks under saddle
Picasso has sired several successful Sport Pony broodmares, who's offspring are just entering the show ring. Many of his babies have been multiple Grand Champions on the line at the Welsh Pony shows. His son, Offside, was named the 2009 WPCSC Canadian National Champion Junior English Pleasure and Canadian National Reserve Champion Junior Hunter and Western Pleasure. He has consistently stamped his beautiful babies with lovely hunter movement, outstanding jumping form, superior conformation and his exquisite head. He's also consistently sired babies with courage and a willing attitude which has made them easy to start under saddle and progress to the show ring. Let Picasso make your next work of art!
